"Bhera" is a Sanskrit word which means: "a place where there is no fear".According to Ancient Geography of India by Alexander Cunningham, Bhera was once known as Jobnathnagar. The Imperial Gazetteer of India records the history of Bhera: In the seventh and eighth centuries, the Salt Range chieftain was a tributary of Kashmīr.The city is known for wood-carved items, textiles (such as quilts and khussas), and certain desserts (such as pheonian and pateesa). The city is made up of the Old Town and the surrounding newer development. The Old Town is surrounded by tall walls with eight gates, and is divided up into mohallas, or neighborhoods; historically, different castes lived in different mohallas.

NINE HISTORICAL DARWAZAS OF BHERA
One of the identities of Bhera was its nine historical darwazas , like Walled City Lahore. These were reconstructed between ( 1863 -73 ). Out of nine , three have completely destroyed , demolished and their land encroached - Peeranwala , Hagi Gulab and Loharan Mori . Others have been renovated , but not in original form . Old pictures of nine darwazas are given below. As in principle a decision has been taken by the Government of Punjab to conserve and preserve Bhera and Multan as Walled cities , like Lahore : nine historical darwazas of Bhera in original condition could be a big tourists attraction .
Government of Punjab is requested that three darwazas of Bhera , which have completely vanished and their land encroached be immediately reconstructed in original condition . Efforts should also be made to conserve and preserve the remaining darwazas . I hope my genuine request will be considered by the concerned authorities . Zahid Mumtaz 21 January 2022
MIRAN DE NAGRI Hazrat Miran Shah Sahib
(died in AD1681 - 1092 Hijri in Bhera) Hazrat Miran Shah Sahib was a selfless saint who worked for the spread of Islam peacefully and with love , particularly in Bhera . His shrine is located in the western part of the town in mohalla Pirachgan . People from different sects and places visit his shrine through out the year , specifically in the month of March / April ( Chaitira ) to pay homage to the saint. Because of him Bhera is also known as Miran - de - Nagri . He was born in the late 16th century or early 17th century. His exact date of birth is not known . However , he died in AD 168I ( 1092 Hijri) in Bhera , it was the era of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb . Miran Sahib was also present at the time of Emperor Jahangir and Shah Jahan . The reign of Emperor Jahangir was from AD1605 to 1627 , Emperor Shah Jahan from AD 1627 to 1658 and Emperor Aurangzeb from AD 1658 to 1707 .

MASJID QAZIAN , MOHALLA QAZIANWALA
Masjid Qazian is one of the smallest mosques in Bhera . It is located inside Ganjwala Darwaza ( Lahori Gate - 1869 ), in Kacheri bazaar , near mohalla Malakanwala and Imam Kot. It is believed to be of Shah Jahan 's period , who reigned from 1638 to 1658. Situated at the entrance of mohalla Qazianwala, which is a close - ended mohalla , comprising six to eight houses . The mosque has three bays . The central one is bigger than the two on either side. The central bay is surmounted with a hemispherical dome while the side bays have slightly curvilinear roof . A verandah has been added in front of the prayer chamber. There are two graves in the courtyard in the northeastern corner and a Khui .The graves are said to be older than the mosque itself . Reference : History , Archaeology and Architecture of Bhera - Reference article in the book , " Historic Town of Punjab : Ancient and Medieval Period" by Dr Abdul Rehman, published by Feroz Sons ( Ptv) Ltd , Lahore 199
The mosque has a long history , has seen many ups and downs . Qazianwala, through a tiny mohalla of Bhera , but has produced renowned people , since the times of Mughals . Efforts will be made to write about them with authentic references .
A comment by someone has made me inquisitive to know more about mohalla Qazian and its mosque. A comment mentioned as verbatim :
" Mohalla Qazian is my ancestor 's mohalla . Syed Nizam ud Din was Qazi ul Qaza ( Chief Justice ) . He was my great grandfather's , great father during the Mughal period . As told by elders of the family he was appointed as Qazi - ul - Qaza of Pargana Bhera . Later , during Mughal days , some land was allotted to Qazi Sahib . He developed it and named it Chak Qazi near Bhera ".
Mohalla Imliwala , Bhera
Mohalla Imliwala is one of the oldest middle - size mohallas of Bhera , located almost in the centre of the walled town with eight gates . Wall's alignment was close to present - day Circular Road . In the east of mohalla is bazaar Dalgaran , in the north mohalla Malhotranwala ( now called Jandianwala) , in the west Tharkhanawala ( mohalla Pakistani ) and in the south main bazaar .
Captain Sh Amir - ud - Din (Retired), son of Sh Fazal Ellahi Naseer - ud - Din , once mentioned to me that his ancestors migrated from mohalla Imliwala about fifteen generations ago to Indian Gujarat , and then to Delhi , reasons unknown. After the Mutiny of 1857, the family was forced to leave Delhi , as they did not side with the British. Elders decided to migrate to Kabul , but on way when they stopped near Rawat ... they decided to settle down in Rawalpindi . How the family progressed in Rawalpindi is an other story.
If Amir- ud - Din 's story is believed to be true , it means his ancestors moved out of Bhera more than 400 years ago ( one generation is generally considered to be about thirty years ) . It was the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan ( 1628 - 1658). The new Bhera on the left bank of river Jhelum , opposite the old one was founded by Sher Shah Suri in AD 1540 - 45 . So , it is an estimated guess that mohalla Imliwala exited more than four centuries ago.
More reserch is required to know who all lived in Imliwala..... their contributions for Bhera ... . I would suggest some youngster , who is interested in the history and curtural heritage of Bhera should take up this project.

Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb Alamgir
Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb Alamgir was the sixth Mughal emperor, who ruled for 49 years. He died in 1707. In the documentary it is mentioned that grave in Zainpur , Bhera graveyard is of Shahzadi Zain , granddaughter of Emperor Aurungzeb . So , the time period is roughly early 1700 ( one generation is of about 30 years ). By 1700 Bhera was well established. Zainpur is just about two kms from Bhera . Hazarat Miran Shah Sahib died in 1681AD ( 1092 Higri), in Bhera. His darbar is in mohalla Pirachgan.
A friend of mine, Capt Sheikh Amir ud Din ( Retd), told me that as per his ancestors and family history, his ancestors migrated from mohalla Imliwala, Bhera, about 15 generations ago ( around 450 years ago ). It means mohalla Imliwala is one of the oldest mohallas of Bhera. Do read brief write-ups about mohalla Imliwala, Bhera and Hazarat Miran Shah Sahib, Bhera .

SHEIKHANWALI MASJID , MOHALLAH SHEIKHANWALA
The mosque is situated in the mohalIa of the same name . It is one of the monumental mosques of Bhera. It may be called Uchchi Masjid , being built on a higher plinth. The mosque also dominates the skyline. It seems to have been built during the Shah Jahan period. There are two octagonal bastions in the northeastern and southeastern corners of the mosque. A flight of steps from the southeastern side of the east wall rises up to a platform , from where access is gained to the courtyard of the mosque. The mosque has a three bay wide prayer chamber. The central one is bigger than the two on either side. These are surmounted with domes. The central dome is also bigger and higher than the two on either side . The mosque is smaller in size , but being built on a higher plinth is impressive. Reference : Chapter on Bhera, The Town of Buildings , Arts and Crafts", from the book "Historic Towns of Punjab" by Dr. Abdur Rehma, Feroze Sons, Lahore.
Sheikhanwali Masjid has been repaired /renovated a number of times, but its basic structure is the same. Being in the close-ended mohalla , not many people visit it. From the roof of the mosque there is an all round observation of the town.On the clear day the Salt Range and lights of Khewra town are visible . Recommended to be preserved as the historical monument of Bhera by the concerned authorities. Few pictures of the mosque taken at different times are shared.
